What Is Social Justice?

CFSJ believes that social justice is subjective and thus personal. This means that individual define social justice for themselves based on their own experiences and history.

In 2011 CFSJ used trees, as a symbol of community and growth, to facilitate activities around defining what Calgarians experience and feel is social justice. People were asked to write their responses on leaves and to add them to the tree. As the trees traveled from festival to festival we soon acquired a small forest of information that we currently use to inspire our work.

The following responses were written by the Citizens of Calgary and recorded by CFSJ:

Social Justice issues that are a concern to you as a citizen of Calgary?

- Permit required to cut down tree in the city

- Safe bike path ways in downtown & N.E.

- Person with a Developmental Disability (PDD) funding post 18 yrs

- Putting an end to labour trafficking

- Better use of public spaces

- More recycling in apartment buildings

- Too much urban sprawl

- New houses should all have solar panels

- Hot water on demand

- Increasing the pay of aid works who assist people with disabilities

- Residential city composting and pick-up
